Dick Stein & Alice Wong – Paddler Bios

Dick Stein and Alice Wong (“1 More”)

Alice began paddling in 2011 when she joined a cancer survivors’ team with the intention of taking back territory lost after her battle with cancer.  At that time, Dragon Boat racing events began to grow in the U.S. and around the world and there are now cancer survivor Dragon Boat divisions at most major Dragon Boat venues.  The Cancer League of Colorado is a supporter of the Phantom Dragons survivor program.  Their support is greatly appreciated!

Alice’s husband, Dick, began racing in 2019.  It was a great way for he and Alice to travel and race together.  They have both raced and received medals at the U.S. Club Crew National Championships and they have both raced in the International Dragon Boat Festival.  Alice received a bronze medal at the festival in Ravenna, Italy in 2024 with a team of cancer survivors.

Dick and Alice heartily agree that Dragon Boat racing is an exciting sport for individuals and teams of all ages and levels with races for individuals from high school age to over 60.  Final races at venues are based on earlier race performance or time trials so that the final races are composed of evenly matched teams.  Race finishes often come down to hundredths of a second. If you like being outdoors, being part of a team and you enjoy a good workout, Dragon Boat racing is calling you.

Salvatore Lannutti (“Cuz”) – Paddler Bio

Salvatore Lannutti (“Cuz”)

On a whim, my fellow paddler, Ky, and I attended the Sloan’s Lake Colorado Dragon Boat Festival in 2024. We watched the racing and thought, “That doesn’t seem that difficult—I can do that!” A quick search led me to the Phantom Dragons, and I first picked up a paddle that year just in time for our next race at the Riverdale Regatta.

I quickly found that I had the competitive drive required for racing, but the true fulfillment came from the sense of community inherent to this sport. That camaraderie extends far beyond the water: winter training provides a great way to stay active with pool workouts and weight lifting, but catching up with the same great folks has proven to be even better. The Phantom Dragons helped me find a group of people who inspire me to not only become a better paddler, but a better person.

I’m typically found in the Engine Room focused on transmitting the rhythm from the front of the boat into a solid, sustained push, while also helping by counting our start sequences and relaying commands to the stern.

With the Phantoms, I’ve raced in the following events:

  • Riverdale Regatta – 2024 (3rd Place)
  • Tempe, Arizona – 2025
  • Polson, Montana – 2025 (2nd Place)
  • Sloan’s Lake Dragon Boat Festival – 2025 (250M 2nd Place Sport Division, 500M 2nd Place Premiere Division)
  • Riverdale Regatta – 2025 (1st Place Sport Division)

Outside of paddling, some of my other interests are tending to my garden, foraging for mushrooms, camping, paddleboarding, knitting, and, of course, Dungeons and Dragons.

Kimberly Watanabe – Paddler Bio

Kimberly Watanabe

Kimberly started dragon boat racing in 2023 after being recruited by Deborah Boyd during Deborah’s CardioYoga class that she instructs at the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center. Being land locked in Colorado and spending most of her life within miles of the Pacific Ocean, Kimberly enjoys being on the water again – exercising, competing and being a part of a great community.  She typically sits directly behind Capt. Bligh trying to keep everyone in sync with the stroke rate and taking on any tidal waves coming off Capt.’s paddle from his powerful stroke.

She has traveled with the team to competitive events and dragon boat camps in Arizona, Montana, Kansas and Ontario, Canada.

The Dragonboat Racing Association of Colorado (DRACO) displayed a dragon boat in the Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival Parade on August 9, 2K25.  It was a great opportunity to increase public awareness of the sport of dragon boating and promote our dragon boat program for cancer survivors.

Phantoms Attend Bow Wave Race Camp in Ontario

Members of our coaching staff attended the Bow Wave Race Camp in Pickering, Ontario. This intensive week-long camp taught by world class coaches covered a broad range of subject pertaining to dragon boating technique, coaching, race strategy, etc.  It also afforded an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with paddlers and coaches from all over the United States, Canada and other parts of the world.

On the last day of camp, attendees compete in the highly competitive Pickering Dragon Boat Challenge.  Note that the camp is entirely at the expense of the participants.

Phantoms Compete in 2K25 Arizona Dragon Boat Festival

Congratulations to the Phantoms crew for another strong showing at this year’s Arizona Dragon Boat Festival, held March 29-30, 2K25.  Many thanks to paddlers from other crews who teamed up w/ us to compete in this extremely competitive event!

Also, special recognition for our Pink Phantoms paddlers who assisted crews in other divisions.  A generous grant from the Cancer League of Colorado helped make participation in this event possible for our BCS paddlers.
