Dragon Boat on Display at CLC Race 4 Research

Dragon Boat on Display for National Cancer Survivors Day

As part of its effort to promote its Colorado Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat Program, DRACO had a dragon boat on display at this year’s Race 4 Research on Sunday, August 18, 2K24.  The annual event was hosted by the Cancer League of Colorado, and is a major fund-raiser for that organization.  One of our survivor paddlers, Kimberly Watanabe, entered the race and placed first in her age division!

Phantom Dragons – Winter Dragon Boat Pool Simulator Practices

From November through March, our Phantoms crew trains at the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center, using a custom-designed dragon boat pool simulator.  This training allows us to travel to Tempe each year in March to compete in the Arizona Dragon Boat Festival on equal footing with west coast crews that can paddle on open water year-around. It’s a very hard workout – we’re thrilled when we can finally get back out on the open water!

Unfortunately, the 2023 Arizona Dragon Boat Festival suffered a last-minute cancellation due to flood/debris conditions at Tempe Town Lake.  Still, our winter training left us well-prepared for the summer dragon boat season!

Local BCS Paddler featured in 9News Profile

Check out this news feature profiling our own Rebecca Novak

Several months ago we were approached by a 9News correspondent, inquiring about the possibility of doing a profile featuring one of our BCS paddlers. The project was approved, and work has been ongoing throughout the summer.  The program was initially scheduled to be broadcast the evening of December 30, but was pre-empted at the last minute due to more critical coverage of the Marshall Fire, and finally aired on January 7, 2022.

Pink Phantoms promote at BCS Pink Hat Tea

Members of DRACO’s Phantom Dragons / Pink Phantoms crew were honored to participate in Lutheran Medical Center’s BCS Pink Hat Tea again this year, an annual event for the benefit of newly diagnosed and long-term breast cancer survivors.  This event is a wonderful opportunity to gain visibility and support for our breast cancer survivor dragon boat program, and to connect with prospective BCS paddlers!
