Dragon Boats Race on Grand Lake!
Ten-man Lao Buddhist and Phantom Dragons teams went head to head on Grand Lake in this year’s Spirit of the Lake Regatta, held August 23rd. This was the first year for a dragon boat division to be included in the event (in addition to rowing shells, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards), the result of a joint effort of Infinite West and the Dragonboat Racing Association of Colorado (DRACO).
The Lao Buddhist team emerged victorious, narrowly edging the Phantom Dragons in a close, best-two-out-of-three series of 250-meter races. Congrats LBT!
Dragon Boats to Race in the Spirit of the Lake Regatta!
The DRACO Mini-Dragon Series has officially begun!
The Dragonboat Racing Association of Colorado (DRACO) has teamed up with Infinite West to help raise funds for Colorado River Headwaters Conservation Education by including a dragon boat division in this year’s Spirit of the Lake Regatta, to be held August 23rd on Grand Lake.
This will mark the first time a dragon boat division has been included in this event (and, the first-ever organized dragon boat racing event in Colorado, apart from the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival). Both the Lao Buddhist and Phantom Dragons teams, coming off very successful performances in this year’s CDBF, are expected to compete. Additional information is included in the downloadable Spirit of the Lake DB Challenge Flyer.
There’s still time to register! Come on out and join in the fun!

The Longest Day Event a Huge Success
On June 21, 2K14, the Phantom Dragons competitive dragon boat team participated in The Longest Day, a sunrise to sunset event to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association, and to provide support for, and increase the visibility of, the fun and exciting sport of dragon boat racing.
Joined by our Lao Buddhist Team friends, our paddlers started the day at Union Reservoir (Longmont, CO), paddling as part of the pre-race festivities at the annual Kinetics Sculpture Race. We then finished things off on home turf at Lake Arbor in Arvada (where we hold our practice sessions).
Great paddling was had by all, and it was an awesome event to support a worthwhile cause!
Phantom Dragons to Participate in The Longest Day!
On June 21, the Phantom Dragons will be participating in The Longest Day. From sunrise to sunset, we will be paddling dragon boats to raise awareness and funds for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association, and to provide support for, and increase the visibility of, the fun and exciting sport of dragon boat racing.
Please join us in this effort! We would greatly appreciate it if you would make a monetary contribution and/or help us in obtaining pledges to support these worthwhile causes. If you’re in this area, please come out in person to help in our efforts – it should be a very fun and rewarding day! For more information, see our flyer / pledge form at the following link:

Luke Esbenson Steers in AZ
Phantom Dragons paddler Luke Esbenson, certified last year to steer in the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, got his first experience steering for teams in a major dragon boat event when he volunteered to help at the Arizona Dragon Boat Festival in Tempe, AZ on March 22-23, Luke steered for 16 races over the course of the weekend (in addition to racing with his Phantom Dragons team), and did an outstanding job!
Shown below is Luke, steering for the CRAA team (with several other Phantom Dragons helping fill out the crew, and Tom Ging drumming).
